Over the weekend I had the chance to catch this film with a couple of friends. How could I say no? Post-Apocalyptic Setting - Check
Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman - Check
The Hughes brothers trying to make a comeback - Check
After playing through Fallout 3 for many hours and a brief stint on Borderlands, I thought my capacity for Post-Apocalyptic stories had been maxed out. Then along came the trailers for Book of Eli. So once again I suspended my disbelief and ventured into the 'near' future where Denzel Washington roams the wastelands on an ambiguous trek with divine purpose.
What really sold me about this movie was the style. I went into it with low
expatiations because I had read a couple of reviews that were less than positive. About 30 minutes in, I began to notice qualities of the film which reminded me of old samurai movies. A wandering warrior with a strong moral code and a knack for getting himself in trouble sound familiar? Add in a strong visual style (even if it isn't original) and you have a movie that manages to keep you entertained until the twist. After which you might want to stop paying attention because the film continues for a few minutes and tries to make you forget what you liked about it.I liked this movie and so did 2 out of 3 of the friends that I went with.
